What ISO 10012 certification covers
ISO 10012 sets requirements for measurement processes and measuring equipment. Its purpose is to make sure that the measurements your organization relies on, for product acceptance, process control, safety, billing or regulatory reporting, are good enough for the decisions you make with them.
The core idea is metrological confirmation: the set of activities that show a piece of measuring equipment meets the requirements of its intended use. Calibration is part of it, but not all of it. After calibration you must compare the result with the maximum permissible error your process can tolerate and decide whether the instrument is fit to use, needs adjustment or must be withdrawn.
The standard also covers the measurement process as a whole: the method, the operator, the environment and the equipment together. A perfectly calibrated gauge used in the wrong way, or in the wrong conditions, still gives poor measurements.
- Review of the measurement management system, responsibilities and procedures
- Audit of equipment inventory, metrological confirmation and calibration records
- Check of traceability to national or international measurement standards
- Review of measurement process design, uncertainty and control
- Certificate valid for three years, with yearly surveillance audits
The scope on the certificate names the measurement processes and sites covered, for example dimensional inspection of machined components, or custody transfer metering of natural gas. Customers and auditors read it to see which measurements the certificate supports.
Options: on its own or as part of a wider system
Many organizations meet basic measurement requirements through ISO 9001, which asks that monitoring and measuring resources are suitable and traceable. ISO 10012 goes further, with a full system for measurement, and is chosen when measurement is critical: precision manufacturing, automotive and aerospace suppliers, energy and water metering, pharmaceuticals, process industries and organizations that bill customers by measured quantities.
Certifying ISO 10012 alongside ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 50001 is common, since environmental and energy monitoring also depend on reliable measurement. Shared processes such as document control, internal audit and management review are audited once.
ISO 10012 is not laboratory accreditation. Calibration and testing laboratories that want to prove technical competence are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by an accreditation body. ISO 10012 is for organizations that use measurements, including the way they select and manage external calibration laboratories.
Software that performs or records measurements is part of the system too. Spreadsheets that calculate results, data loggers and inspection software should be validated for their purpose and controlled when changed, which the auditor checks on a sample basis.
What decides the price
ISO 10012 certification with EUROTECH starts at $800. Audit time depends on the scale and criticality of your measurement activities.
- Number of measuring instruments and measurement processes in scope
- Criticality: measurements that affect safety, billing or regulatory compliance
- In-house calibration facilities or reliance on external laboratories
- Number of people and sites
- Integration with other management systems
We confirm audit days and every fee in a written quote. An up-to-date equipment register showing status, intervals and the last confirmation decision makes the audit much faster.
Organizations with in-house calibration laboratories usually need more audit time, because the auditor reviews their methods, reference standards, environmental controls and the competence of calibration staff in addition to the equipment in use.
How ISO 10012 certification works with us

Step 1
Scope and quote
We agree the instruments, processes and sites in scope and quote the audit in writing.

Step 2
Stage 1 review
We review your measurement management procedures, equipment register and confirmation method.

Step 3
Stage 2 audit
The auditor traces instruments from requirement to calibration, confirmation and use.

Step 4
Certificate and surveillance
After the decision you receive the ISO 10012 certificate, with yearly surveillance audits.
Legal metrology and customer requirements by market
We certify ISO 10012 for organizations in the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa. In many countries, instruments used for trade, such as scales, fuel dispensers, utility meters and flow meters, fall under legal metrology rules and must be type-approved and verified by authorized bodies. In the European Union, the Measuring Instruments Directive and the Non-automatic Weighing Instruments Directive set these requirements for new instruments.
ISO 10012 does not replace legal verification, but your system must identify which instruments are subject to it and keep the verification current. During the audit we sample these records.
Customers in demanding sectors often set their own measurement requirements, such as measurement system analysis for automotive parts, and the standard expects you to meet them.
For instruments used across borders, such as meters on export pipelines or scales in shared facilities, agree with your customer which calibration and verification rules apply, and record that agreement in your system.
What to expect during the audit
The auditor will pick instruments from your register and follow them: identification and location, the requirement of the process they serve, the calibration certificate and its traceability, the comparison with the maximum permissible error, the confirmation decision and the label or status shown on the instrument.
Out-of-tolerance events are a key test. If an instrument was found outside its limits at calibration, the standard expects you to assess the effect on measurements made since the previous confirmation and take action on any affected product or decisions. The auditor will ask for those records.
Measurement processes are reviewed too: written methods for critical measurements, operator training, environmental conditions such as temperature, and how measurement uncertainty is estimated where it matters.
Findings are graded and the certification decision rests on the evidence. You receive a written report explaining each finding.
Labels and status indicators are checked on the shop floor: whether each instrument shows its confirmation status clearly, and whether instruments that are out of service are kept apart so they cannot be used by mistake.
The closing meeting summarizes findings by instrument group and agrees dates for corrective actions.
Keeping the certificate
Review confirmation intervals using history: instruments that are always well within limits may have longer intervals, while those that drift need shorter ones. Record the reasoning behind every change.
Surveillance audits sample new instruments, changes in intervals, out-of-tolerance events and the performance of external calibration laboratories. Keep supplier evaluations for those laboratories current, including their accreditation scope, because a calibration outside a laboratory's scope weakens traceability.
Train new operators on critical measurement methods before they work alone, and keep records. Many measurement errors come from method, not equipment, and the surveillance auditor will ask how you control that risk.
Review the register once a year.
Questions buyers ask
How much does ISO 10012 certification cost?
With EUROTECH it starts at $800. Instruments, measurement processes, criticality, in-house calibration and sites set the final price.
Is ISO 10012 the same as ISO/IEC 17025?
No. ISO/IEC 17025 is accreditation of laboratory competence. ISO 10012 is a management system for organizations that use measurements.
What is metrological confirmation?
The activities that show measuring equipment meets the requirements of its intended use, including calibration, comparison with permissible error and a decision on fitness.
Does ISO 10012 replace legal verification of scales and meters?
No. Instruments used for trade remain subject to legal metrology rules in each country.
Who needs ISO 10012?
Organizations where measurement is critical, such as precision manufacturers, utilities, process industries and companies that bill by measured quantities.
Can it be combined with ISO 9001?
Yes. It extends the measurement requirements of ISO 9001, and both can be audited together.
