What the ISO 15504 assessment covers
ISO/IEC 15504, widely known as SPICE, defined how to assess the capability of processes, especially software and system development processes. It introduced the idea of rating each process on a capability scale, from incomplete, through performed, managed, established and predictable, up to innovating, based on evidence from real projects.
The 15504 series has since been replaced by the ISO/IEC 330xx family, such as ISO/IEC 33001, 33002 and 33020, which keep the same core ideas. Many customers, especially in the automotive and embedded sectors, still use the 15504 name, and Automotive SPICE grew out of it.
Our assessment applies this capability approach to the processes that matter for your work, such as requirements, architecture, construction, integration, testing, project management, configuration management, quality assurance and problem resolution, and reports where each process stands and how to move it up.
- Selection of processes from a recognised process reference model
- Evidence collection from one or more representative projects
- Capability rating of each selected process with justification
- Interviews with engineers, testers, project leaders and quality staff
- Written assessment report with ratings, strengths, weaknesses and recommendations
Capability is assessed per process, not for the organization as a whole. A team can be strong in testing and weak in requirements, and the ratings show exactly that, which makes them a practical tool for planning improvement.
Internal improvement or a customer requirement: the options
Organizations ask for a 15504 style assessment for two reasons. Some want an honest view of their process maturity to plan improvement. Others are asked by a customer to demonstrate a given capability level for specific processes, a common request from vehicle manufacturers and their large suppliers.
If your customer requires an official Automotive SPICE assessment, the rules for that assessment, including assessor qualification through intacs, are set outside ISO and must be followed. Tell us your customer's exact requirement before ordering. Our assessment is the right choice for preparation, internal improvement and customers who accept an independent capability assessment without that specific qualification.
The assessment combines well with ISO 12207, which provides the process framework, and with ISO 9001 or IATF-style quality requirements in manufacturing organizations that also develop software and electronics.
A preparation assessment before an official customer assessment is a common use. It shows where evidence is missing while there is still time to fix it, and gives the team practice in explaining their work to an assessor.
What decides the price
A software process assessment with EUROTECH starts at $800. Time depends on the number of processes and projects assessed.
- Number of processes in scope
- Target capability level, since higher levels need more evidence
- Number of projects sampled
- Team size and development sites
- Interviews online or in person
We confirm days and every fee in a written quote. Access to the work products of the sampled projects, such as requirement specifications, test reports and change records, is the most important preparation.
Assessing against higher capability levels takes more time, because the assessor must see not only that work is done, but that it is planned, monitored, adjusted and based on a defined organizational process.
A smaller first scope, such as three or four core engineering processes, keeps the first assessment affordable and focused.
How ISO 15504 assessment works with us

Step 1
Scope and interviews
We agree the processes, target levels and projects, and quote the assessment in writing.

Step 2
Evidence review
We collect work products from the sampled projects and map them to the process model.

Step 3
Process walk-through
We interview the team and rate each process against the capability levels.

Step 4
Findings and report
You receive capability ratings, findings and recommendations in a written report.
Sectors and markets
We carry out software process assessments for organizations in the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa. Demand is strongest in automotive electronics, but the approach is also used in medical devices, industrial automation, railways, aerospace and enterprise software.
Functional safety and cybersecurity standards in these sectors often expect mature development processes. A capability assessment shows where the processes that support safety and security cases are strong and where they need work.
Suppliers serving customers in several countries often face similar process expectations under different names. A single assessment against a recognised model can answer several of these requests.
Suppliers with development teams in several countries often see different maturity in each team. A multi-site assessment shows those differences and helps spread good practice across locations.
Hardware and mechanical engineering processes can also be assessed with the same capability approach where a suitable reference model exists, which suits companies developing complete systems.
What to expect during the assessment
We agree the process scope and the target capability levels, then select one or more representative projects. Evidence is collected from work products and interviews. For each process, we judge whether its purpose is achieved and, at higher levels, whether it is planned, monitored, controlled and standardized across the organization.
Expect detailed questions on traceability between system requirements, software requirements, architecture, code and tests, on how changes are controlled, and on how project risks and problems are tracked. Ratings are explained with the evidence behind them, so your team understands exactly why a process sits at a given level.
Supplier monitoring is often in scope as well. If you subcontract software or hardware development, we look at how you specify, monitor and accept the work delivered, since customers hold you responsible for it.
Work products are checked for consistency rather than volume. A short, accurate requirement specification that is traced to tests is stronger evidence than a long document nobody maintains.
We close with a presentation of the ratings and a written report with strengths, weaknesses and recommendations, plus a statement describing the assessment.
The final report lists each rating with the evidence that supports it, so results can be shared with customers who ask for them.
After the assessment
Use the ratings to plan improvement where it matters most, usually the processes rated lowest that your customers care about most. Focus on making good practice consistent across projects, which is what moves processes from level 1 to level 2 and beyond.
A follow-up assessment after the improvement period shows the change in ratings. If you later need an official Automotive SPICE assessment, the improvements and evidence prepared here reduce the effort considerably.
Keep the momentum by reviewing process improvement in regular management meetings, with the ratings as the baseline.
Celebrate progress when ratings improve.
Please note: ISO/IEC 15504 has been replaced by the ISO/IEC 330xx family. Our assessment follows the same capability approach and results in an assessment report and statement. It is not an official Automotive SPICE assessment by an intacs certified assessor; if your customer requires one, tell us before ordering.
Questions buyers ask
Is ISO 15504 still valid?
It has been replaced by the ISO/IEC 330xx family, which keeps the same capability approach. Many customers still use the 15504 or SPICE name.
Is this an official Automotive SPICE assessment?
No. Official Automotive SPICE assessments follow their own rules, including intacs assessor qualification. Tell us if your customer requires one.
How much does a software process assessment cost?
With EUROTECH it starts at $800. Processes, target levels, projects, team size and interviews set the final price.
What are the capability levels?
From level 0 incomplete, through performed, managed, established and predictable, to level 5 innovating.
Do you issue a certificate?
We issue an assessment report with ratings and a statement describing the assessment, not a management system certificate.
Can the assessment be done online?
Largely yes, using shared work products and video interviews.
