What the ISO 56002 assessment covers

ISO 56002:2019 gives guidance for an innovation management system. It describes how an organization can create value from new ideas in a repeatable way, rather than relying on luck or a few talented people. It applies to companies of any size, public bodies and not-for-profit organizations, and to any kind of innovation: products, services, processes, business models or ways of working.

The guidance follows the familiar management system structure, adapted to innovation. It asks about the context and strategic intent for innovation, leadership and an innovation culture, planning and objectives, support such as resources, competence, tools and intellectual property, the innovation processes themselves, from identifying opportunities to deploying solutions, and how performance is evaluated and improved.

Our assessment compares your organization with this guidance and tells you where innovation is managed well, where it depends on chance and what would make the greatest difference.

  • Review of innovation strategy, objectives and portfolio
  • Assessment of the innovation process from opportunity to deployment
  • Review of culture, leadership support, resources and intellectual property management
  • Interviews with leadership and innovation teams
  • Written assessment report with findings and recommendations

Innovation management is different from research and development. A company can spend heavily on research and still struggle to bring new value to customers, while a company with no laboratory can innovate constantly in its services and processes. The guidance looks at the whole system, not only at the budget.

ISO 56002 guidance and the newer ISO 56001

ISO 56002 is guidance, which is why we offer an assessment rather than a certificate against it. In 2024 ISO published ISO 56001, which sets requirements for an innovation management system and is designed to be certifiable.

If your aim is a certificate, the assessment against ISO 56002 is a practical first step: it shows how close your current practice is to a structured system, and the findings map closely onto the requirements of ISO 56001. If your aim is improvement rather than a certificate, the assessment on its own gives you a clear plan.

Tell us your goal when you ask for a quote, and we will scope the assessment so the report serves it.

The assessment also helps organizations that want to show funding bodies, investors or partners that they manage innovation in a structured way, without committing to a full certification project.

What decides the price

An ISO 56002 assessment with EUROTECH starts at $800. Time depends on the breadth of innovation activity to be assessed.

  • Size of the organization and number of units that innovate
  • Number of innovation projects or initiatives to sample
  • Types of innovation: product, service, process, business model
  • Partners such as universities, start-ups or customers involved in innovation
  • Interviews online or in person

We confirm days and every fee in a written quote. A list of current and recent innovation projects, with their status and outcome, is the most useful document to share in advance.

Organizations with several business units that innovate independently usually need more time, because we sample how each unit works and how the units share ideas, resources and lessons learned.

Innovation in different markets

We carry out ISO 56002 assessments for organizations in the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa. Public funding programmes, tax incentives for research and development, and intellectual property rules differ by country, and they shape how organizations innovate. The assessment considers how well you use the instruments available where you operate.

Intellectual property deserves particular attention when innovation crosses borders. Patents, trademarks and designs are territorial, so protection in one market does not cover another. We look at whether your approach to intellectual property matches the markets you plan to enter.

Open innovation with partners in other countries brings its own questions: who owns results, how confidential information is protected and how contributions are recognised.

Talent and skills are another local factor. Access to engineers, designers and data specialists differs by location, and the assessment looks at how you build or borrow the competence your innovation strategy needs.

What to expect during the assessment

We start with strategy and leadership: why innovation matters to the organization, what it is expected to deliver and how leaders support it with time, money and attention. Then we follow a few innovation initiatives through their life: how the opportunity was found, how concepts were tested with users, how decisions to continue or stop were made, and how successful ideas were deployed.

Expect questions on failure as well as success. The guidance values learning from initiatives that did not work, and organizations that can show what they learned are often more innovative than those that report only successes.

Portfolio management is a frequent topic. We look at whether you have a view of all innovation initiatives in one place, how you balance small improvements against bolder bets, and how resources move from initiatives that stall to ones that show promise.

Measurement is reviewed as well. Typical indicators include the share of revenue from new offerings, time from idea to launch, the number of ideas tested with users and the cost of initiatives stopped early. We check that your indicators match your strategic intent.

The assessment can run online, in person or as a mix. We close with a meeting and a written report with findings graded by importance and practical recommendations.

After the assessment

Use the report to agree a short list of improvements, such as a clearer innovation strategy, a simple decision process for funding ideas, or better tracking of results, and assign owners and dates. Review progress with leadership after six months.

If you decide to pursue certification to ISO 56001 later, the assessment findings show where to start, and many of the improvements will already be in place.

Celebrate learning as well as results. Sharing what was learned from stopped initiatives encourages people to propose bold ideas and to stop weak ones early, which is the behaviour the guidance aims for.

Revisit the innovation strategy each year, since markets and technology move quickly.

Please note: ISO 56002 is guidance. EUROTECH carries out an independent assessment against it and issues an assessment report and statement, not a management system certificate.
